The secret world of Britney’s circus

BYLINE: REBEKAH DEVLIN, NATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

It’s all very polite and guarded, as Rebekah Devlin steps inside the tightly controlled world of Britney Spears

YOU sign a waiver before you’re allowed into the arena. It basically says you can’t say or do anything to humiliate or expose Britney, you can’t give interviews without authorisation and you can’t take photos.

Basically, you must never speak of what you saw.

The opportunity to be part of the set-up for Britney Spears’ first Australian performance in Perth is a rare insight. Not that you get to meet her, of course. We are ushered out before the popstar arrives in her van with blacked-out windows.

It’s very clear that the crew are hypersensitive about the star. Ask them even the simplest personal question, such as: “what’s she like?”, and the body language changes. You notice their bodies tighten and they shift uncomfortably.

“She’s a perfectionist and an entertainer,” assistant tour manager Kari Sellards says.

“It’s hard to pinpoint (why she’s so popular). We’ve heard a lot of fans say she’s an inspiration to them.”

Sellards has been working on the tour since January, but she’s known Britney since the singer wore mouse ears.

“My sister was the accountant on The Mickey Mouse Club,” she says of the TV show which catapulted Spears to fame.

Plus, she used to work on the tours for Justin Timberlake’s old band ‘N Sync. Britney was the support act.

“Her and her management and her dad like using people they know. It’s like a big family,” Sellards says.

“It’s trust. The crew, she puts her life in their hands.”

She’s speaking of the hydraulic lifts Spears uses throughout her 105-minute Circus tour shows. It’s just one aspect that makes the staging a sight to behold.

Then there’s the $2 million worth of costumes, incredible in their intricacy, and the breathtaking support acts. Acrobats and martial arts experts whirl around the stage on rings, bicycles and skateboards.

One of the brains behind the spectacle is tour director Steve Dixon, who’s worked with Britney for 10 years.

“I think it’s the best live entertainment I’ve seen in a long time and I’ve seen pretty much everything,” he says, add-ing that the show is the biggest indoor concert staged in Australia.

“From the time we unlock the first truck until we’re ready for the first show is about 12 hours,” Dixon says.

“By the time Britney walks off stage and the lights go up we’re about three-and-a-half hours until every piece of equipment is back on the trucks. It’s a huge undertaking.”

Despite his long relationship with Spears, or perhaps because of it, it’s a near-impossible task to draw him on the real Britney.

“She is amazing. She has an amazing work ethic and she’s fantastic on stage.

“She really believes in giving the fans what they’ve paid for.”

“She is really focused on delivering a huge performance.” He says it is not his role to get personal with the star.

“The only time I get involved in their personal lives is when it affects business and with Britney it’s real important, as with all my clients, it’s real important to help them keep a balance.

“Because this is a lot of work, it’s a huge physical undertaking for them, so you have to help them have a balance of work and personal time.”

Balance is something that appears to have been missing from Spears’ life in recent years.
Life for the 27-year-old really has become a giant circus.

Stalked by paparazzi, mocked as a tragic figure for her very public breakdowns yet idolised by her diehard fans, it seems at times there is nothing about her we don’t know.

She barely gives interviews. Any she does agree to are so tightly stage-managed, even they end up revealing little about the singer.

After years of turmoil, the Circus world tour has gone a way to silencing her critics. It is her voice which is still causing problems.

Accusations of lip-syncing have dogged the star. Yet it doesn’t seem to worry fans happy to fork $1500 for couches surrounding the stage.

Dixon defends the show but refuses to be drawn on whether or not the popstar mimes.

“This is a pop spectacular,” he says. “We absolutely give them what they come for.”
Spears likes to keep things fresh, so she tweaks the musical arrangements as well as her costumes for each show.

“She has three different costumes choices for each change,” head of wardrobe Latisha Yates says.

Some nights Britney wants a body suit. Other nights she opts for pink or rhinestones.
It is one person’s full-time job to replace the rhinestones. Yates is also in charge of helping Spears change outfits, usually in less than a minute.

Are there ever any diva antics?

“No way,” Yates says, “She’s a country girl. She’s very polite.”

There is one subject Britney’s staff happily gush over: her boys, Sean Preston, 4, and Jayden , 3.
Despite driving with babies on laps and ongoing custody issues, it is clear Britney lives for her sons. “When her kids are around she’s a different person,” Sellards says.

During rehearsals the boys are normally found dancing along and mesmerised. “I guess they think it’s normal,” Sellards says.

In fact Spears is surrounded by family. Her father Jamie has been to every show on her world tour.

“She’s down to earth because her family’s still behind her,” Sellards says. “Everyone needs that person behind them who tells them the truth.” Deep end diva QWeekend

I don’t think Rebekah has the nicest history of writing on Britney. I also think Rebekah edited her own profile big time today.
