Paula Speaks Out On Ellen

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Paula Abdul can’t be happy with the news that she’s been replaced on “American Idol” by Ellen DeGeneres—and had to find out about it when the general public did. But the former judge is taking the high road and hiding her disappointment.

E! News reports Abdul released a statement today. “American Idol is a fantastic show that offers an invaluable platform to young talent. Ellen DeGeneres is wildly funny and talented in her own right. I wish her and the show only the best of luck.”

Kudos to Paula for being a class act, but I can’t help wondering if she wishes she had played her cards differently. Did her new manager convince her that “Idol” couldn’t live without her and would cave in to her demands?

“Idol” Fans Split On Ellen

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Some fans of “American Idol” are still in shock over the announcement yesterday that talk show host Ellen DeGeneres would replace Paula Abdul on the show.

The AP reports that while some viewers applaud the change, others question the new Judge’s credentials for the job. “Idol” blogger MJ Santilli commented, “I mean, really? Ellen DeGeneres? She guest judged ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ last season, and her critiques were comic relief. So is she going to be a real judge or some kind of joke? She’s a comedian, not a singer or a musician. I’m kinda flummoxed here.”

On her show today, DeGeneres explained her take on “Idol.” “Hopefully, I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you. I sit at home and I watch it, and I don’t have that technical … I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person.”

Will Ellen please the die-hard “Idol” fans? Only time will tell. But Paula’s presence, although sometimes incoherent, will certainly be missed.

Paula Says Goodbye To “Idol”

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Maybe she wasn’t bluffing after all. After weeks of speculation about whether Paula Abdul would return to her hosting job on “American Idol,” she dropped this bumbshell on her Twitter last night. “With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to ‘Idol’ …I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from Day 1 become an international phenomenon … What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me … It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month … I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all.”

Today this statement came from Fox, FremantleMedia and 19: “Paula Abdul has been an important part of the ‘American Idol’ family over the last eight seasons, and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”

So what really went down? Most sources suspect Paula was upset that other cast members had received huge raises, while her requests were rejected. But I suspect we haven’t heard the end of this, and won’t be surprised if all parties make nice before the show actually goes on the air. The whole Paula affair has certainly generated press for “Idol,” hasn’t it?

Paula’s Dog-gone Surprise

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Those “American Idol” judges can get downright mean when they’re trying to whip contestants into shape, but one of them was kind enough to do a good deed for one of this year’s hopefuls.

According to E!, Paula Abdul consoled Scott MacIntyre after his dismissal five weeks ago, promising the first blind “Idol” finalist, “I have a wonderful surprise for you in a couple of weeks.”

The judge made good on her promise Friday, when she gifted MacIntyre with a guide dog from Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar, CA. The organization is matching up the young singer with the right dog, and the two will go through training together after the “Idol” tour ends in September.

Is Paula Moving On?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

4-21-09pa

Paula Abdul’s contract with “American Idol” end with this season. Will she be back—or is Kara DioGuardi being groomed to replace her?

In an interview on ABC News Nightline scheduled to air Thursday, Paula didn’t sound worried about the possibility. “I don’t think anyone [can]. First of all, Kara says, ‘I could never replace you.’”

But Paula does admit her time on the show could be coming to an end. “Whenever there is change, it’s not about replacing anybody, it’s about possibly moving on.”

As wacky as her behavior gets sometimes, I hope she stays as long as “AI” lasts. Te show just wouldn’t be the same without her. Nobody else can push Simon’s buttons the way Paula does!
