‘Tropic Thunder’ Premiere Boycotted

Ben Stiller’s most recent creation, Tropic Thunder, is not getting thunderous applause from some disability groups. In fact, there’s quite a number of them boycotting the movie. The film, which is about a bunch of actors who go into the jungles to shoot a film and end up getting lost (it does sound kind of funny), is being criticized for using the word “retard” too much when referring to one of the character’s character. The coalition of 22 groups, including the Special Olympics, the Arc of the United States and the National Down Syndrome Congress, launched a nationwide boycott of the film -which opens for wide release Wednesday. Last night at the film’s premiere, many folks picketed outside the Mann Bruin in Westwood, right along where many of the movie’s stars walked the red carpet. Ben, of course, defends his film: “It’s sort of edgy territory, but we felt that as long as the focus was on the actors who were trying to do something to be taken seriously that’s going too far or wrong, that was where the humor would come from,” he told MTV News. We’ll just have to see if the boycott worked after the weekend box office results.
Jack Black’s Wild Past

New dad Jack Black’s life couldn’t be better these days. Besides a hit movie in theaters (Kung Fu Panda), Jack and his wife Tanya just welcomed their second son, Thomas, in May. Still, the comedian has had his share of a very troubling past. In the new issue of Blender Magazine, Jack talked about his past drug use. On his early exposure to substances: “In ninth grade, I did acid and cocaine. I wanted desperately to be an American badass. There’s something so romantic, when you’re a kid, about being a criminal. You want to belong to the tough-guy club. Running from the cops. Hiding in the bushes. Making schemes and plans to get it over on the Man.” He went on to talk about his one-time heroin use (”It didn’t agree with me”) and his marijuana habit (”There is an occasional celebratory jay, but it’s not a wake-and-bake scenario anymore at all”). He then described his cigarette habit and how he used Wellbutrin to quit (which he also had to ween out of). Fun times. I love how Jack’s super open about everything. Jack’s upcoming movie, Tropic Thunder, is set to hit theaters August 15. In the movie, he plays a character who has to go through withdrawals.

A big and yummy congratulations to Jack Black and wife Tanya Haden! The couple are expecting their second child. They have a one year old, Samuel, who’s absolutely adorable (even when he’s crying, as you can see in the picture). Jack’s the latest celebrity whose announced that they’re expecting. Hollywood’s definitely been handed to the babies. I think Jack Black would be amusing pregnant. Yes, if there was an invention that would allow men to get pregnant, I would nominate Jack as the first recipient. He just seems like the type who’d really enjoy being pregnant and eating all sorts of random food pairings. I also bet he’s a really supportive daddy-to-be. He’s probably made his number of late-night food runs for Tanya. Anyway, congrats Jack and Tanya. May the force be with you.

When he’s not wearing his multi-colored wrestling gear, or taking Vitamin D with his Tenacious partner, Jack Black’s just your normal and loving daddy to son Samuel. Seen here with his lady, Tanya Haden, Jack spent the day at the park in Beverly Hills showing off his paternal finesse. That sounded like a hair commercial. Then again, it’s probably because we can’t help but notice that Mr. Black has gone blonde for now, but that just might be for an upcoming film role. We soon shall see.
