Tom’s Sorry About Mormon Comment

Last week, Tom Hanks made a statement to Fox News calling Mormons “Un-American” for their support of Prop 8. which outlaws gay marraige in California. Hanks seems to have rethought his stance and today his publicist Leslee Dart released this statement to People: 

Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California’s Proposition 8 as “un-American.” I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination. But everyone has a right to vote their conscience – nothing could be more American. To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are “un-American” creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use “un- American” lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have.

Maybe he’s afraid those Mormons will boycott his movies. Do they even go to movies?

Hanks Calls Mormons “Un-American”

Tom Hanks has never been afraid to speak out about issues that he believes in and he minced no words when he talked to E! News about California’s passage of Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage in the state.

“The truth is this takes place in Utah, the truth is these people are some bizarre offshoot of the Mormon Church, and the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop 8 happen. There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them. I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here’s what happens now.”

Hanks and all Prop 8 foes have to prepare for a very long fight because this issue won’t be settled any time soon.

Exclusive: Tom Hanks Filming A&D

I’ll always remember Tom Hanks eating that mini-corn on Big. Forrest Gump might come a close second, but Big is my favorite Tom Hanks movie ever. Or is it Splash? It changes everyday. Our photogs got some exclusive photos of Tom filming Angels & Demons in Long Beach yesterday. Angels & Demons is another one of Dan Brown’s books that Ron Howard has decided to make into a movie. Tom played Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code and he plays Bob again in A&D. Here comes another of my two cents. As a book, I liked Angels & Demons much more than The Da Vinci Code, so I’m hoping the same for the movie. Can’t wait to see it, Tom! Check out more pics of Tom Hanks and his bathrobe below.
