Ms. Kidman Goes To Washington
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009Actress Nicole Kidman took on a new role today, as she addressed the U.S. Congress as an advocate for women around the world who are victims of violence. She appeared in support of The International Violence Against Women Act, a five-year program to combat violence against women worldwide. The bill will be introduced in the next several weeks, and Congress will be voting on it during the current session.
As reported by WJLA news, Kidman’s message was blunt and to the point. “This Pakistani woman was scarred for life by her husband…He threw acid on her. In Afghanistan, this girl was attacked for going to school. And in the Congo, as many as 90 percent of the women in some villages have been raped. These champions need and deserve our support. Not with a box of band aids but with a comprehensive, well-funded approach that acknowledges that women’s rights are human rights.”
Let’s hope the pols listened to Kidman’s serious message and didn’t just look at her pretty face.
